THURSDAY & FRIDAY 4th & 5th JUNE 2009 (DUBAI)

THURSDAY & FRIDAY (4th & 5th JUNE 2009)

Here we are in down-town Dubai. Some nice shacks here...!!!

We arrived two days ago (4th June) and am staying with ex-friends from Hobart...oops...I mean friends from ex-Hobart. Think I'm getting deeper into trouble here...!!!

The first 200 blogs may be all over the place as we learn the system...and some of you know how adaptable I am to new technology (stop laughing Henzell!)

We enjoyed down-town Dubai (Jumeirah Beach Walk) and a meal at a restaurant called 'Scoozie' specialising in Italian & Japanese food. An odd combination I thought.

We people watched - fascinating, saw visually stunning '2012' model cars (nothing like these at home), observed that NO-ONE was drinking alcohol (not allowed) and enjoyed the balmy 35 degrees (a far cry from the 5 degrees we left in Hobart). The streetscapes are set out like the interior of flash shops with marbled facades, water features and designer pavers.

The next day (5th) we spent much of the day driving around getting orientated to the massive expanse of sands and buildings. Words fail us. We've found ourselves smack bang in the middle of the most modern city in the world and we're stunned. Most of you know I'm not a 'city' person but this is so amazing to see. The tallest building in the world is here too - no other building comes close to the The Burj Dubai at 818 meters. We walked along the Dubai Creek and enjoyed watching the Dhow's (cargo boats) and the Abra's (people transporters).

Little did we know we would soon be making our way up 'The Creek' on one of these Abra's. Fantastic.

Also enjoyed seeing the wharf chocker full of cargo ready to be loaded on to the Dhows for Iran. Everything from orange juice to washing machines. Bit concerned about the freshness of the orange juice after sitting in the Dubai sun all day!

From here we went to the Madinat Souk and enjoyed the BEST meal at Left Bank. We also got the best views of 'the Burj Al Arab', the worlds only 7-star hotel. On to Jumeirah Palms and Royal Towers, all built on reclaimed land.

We rubber-necked all day and still can't believe half of what we've seen. Really amazing.

Trudi said that there was a strange message on your answer machine at 3am on Thursday in some foreign language (Russian?) so hope the next phase goes to plan. Get ready for the culture shock!
